Fluids and capacities.

What goes where, how much, and how often. One warning up front: the gearbox takes genuine Honda MTF; standard gear oil will destroy the synchros.

Power Steering
Power Steering Fluid
Capacity
None
Specification
Electric power steering, no fluid
Interval
Not applicable

The S2000 has no power steering fluid. It uses electric power steering, which was unusual for a sports car in 1999. There is no pump, no belt and no reservoir to check.

If your steering has gone heavy, the fault is electrical rather than hydraulic. The EPS control module is a known failure point, and new modules are hard to come by, so used and rebuilt units are the usual route.

Brakes and Clutch
Brake and Clutch Fluid
Capacity
No published figure; a full brake and clutch flush uses under 1 US qt
Specification
Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3
Interval
Every 3 years regardless of mileage

Honda's full wording is worth having in front of you: "Always use Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3. If it is not available, you should use only DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid, from a sealed container, as a temporary replacement." So DOT 3 is the specification and DOT 4 is a temporary substitute, not an equal alternative.

Honda also warns explicitly that DOT 5 is not compatible with this braking system and can cause extensive damage. DOT 5 is silicone based and is a different product from DOT 5.1, which is glycol based; the labels are confusingly similar.

Honda does not publish a brake system capacity. The owner's manuals only tell you to keep the reservoirs between MIN and MAX. Owners report that a complete flush of the brakes and the clutch takes well under a quart, so one 32 oz bottle of DOT 3 covers the job with some left for top ups.

The clutch has its own reservoir. It uses the same fluid specification as the brakes, which is where the common belief that they share a reservoir comes from, but Honda lists a dedicated clutch fluid tank (46972-SF1-003) with its own cap and mounting band, sitting near the brake master cylinder. Check and bleed it separately. The clutch master and slave cylinders are a well known failure point on these cars, and a leaking master is often the reason a car will not go into gear.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air whether you drive the car or not, which is why the interval is time based rather than mileage based. Track use calls for a higher boiling point fluid and more frequent flushes.

Cooling
Coolant
Capacity
1.72 US gal (6.5 L) system refill, 2.01 US gal (7.6 L) total
Specification
Honda Type 2 blue, premixed
Interval
2000 to 2001: first at 45,000 mi or 3 yr, then every 30,000 mi. 2002 to 2005: first at 120,000 mi or 10 yr, then every 60,000 mi or 5 yr. 2006 on: Maintenance Minder code 5

Honda Type 2 blue coolant comes premixed and does not need diluting. Mixing coolant types is a common cause of gelling in older Hondas.

The interval is completely different on early cars. The 2000 and 2001 maintenance schedule calls for the first coolant change at 45,000 miles or 3 years and then every 30,000 miles, because those cars did not use the long life formulation. The familiar 120,000 then 60,000 mile figures only apply from 2002. An owner of a 2000 or 2001 car working to the later schedule would be roughly 75,000 miles late on the first change.

The system holds 1.72 US gallons when refilling after a drain. The 2.01 gallon figure is the total including the reserve tank and what stays in the engine. Both figures are unchanged across all ten model years.

Capacities checked against all ten owner's manuals, 2000 to 2009. Intervals checked against Honda Owners Site maintenance schedules for 2001 and 2002.

Differential
Differential Fluid
Capacity
0.78 US qt (0.74 L) at a fluid change, 0.81 US qt (0.77 L) at overhaul
Specification
SAE 90 hypoid gear oil, API GL5 or GL6
Interval
30,000 mi normal, 15,000 mi severe or mountainous driving

Honda's wording in the owner's manual is precise and slightly wider than most charts report: "Use an SAE 90 viscosity hypoid gear oil, API service classified GL5 or GL6 only." Honda does not require a Honda branded oil here, and GL6 is permitted as well as GL5.

The S2000 uses a torque sensing limited slip differential. Check that your chosen fluid is rated for limited slip use.

It takes less than a quart, so one bottle covers a change with some to spare. The capacity is the same for every model year. Honda's own term for the larger figure is "at overhaul" rather than dry.

Honda calls for 30,000 mile changes, shortened to 15,000 miles specifically for cars regularly driven in mountainous areas, because the extra shear breaks the fluid down faster. That is a narrower trigger than Honda's general severe conditions list.

Capacities checked against all ten owner's manuals, 2000 to 2009. Specification and interval checked against the owner's manual and factory service data.

Genuine Honda MTF
Interval
120,000 mi normal (90,000 mi on 2000 to 2001 cars), many owners do 30,000

Use genuine Honda MTF and nothing else. This is the single most repeated piece of advice in the S2000 community and it is repeated for a reason. Standard GL-5 gear oil attacks the yellow metal in the synchros, and the S2000 gearbox is unusually sensitive to it. A grinding second gear synchro is the usual symptom, and it does not heal.

Honda's underlying figure is 1.56 US qt (1.48 L), which every owner's manual rounds to 1.6 US qt (1.5 L) for a change, with 1.7 US qt (1.6 L) as the total. The 1.7 figure that circulates online is that total, quoted in the service summary of the 2004 to 2009 manuals. Fill to the bottom edge of the filler hole rather than trusting a number.

The interval is not one number across the run. The 2000 and 2001 schedule calls for a change at 90,000 miles or 6 years. From 2002 the fixed schedule moves it to 120,000 miles, and 2006 onward cars have no mileage figure at all: the fluid is changed when Maintenance Minder sub code 3 appears.

Honda's published interval is far longer than common practice. Most owners change it around 30,000 miles. That is a community habit rather than a requirement, though this gearbox is known to be sensitive to fluid condition.

Capacities checked against all ten owner's manuals, 2000 to 2009, and Honda's specification sheets. Intervals checked against Honda Owners Site maintenance schedules for 2001, 2002 and 2007 to 2009.

Specification
API premium grade 10W-30 detergent oil
Interval
7,500 mi or 1 year normal, 3,750 mi or 6 months severe

Honda's figures: 5.1 US quarts including a new filter, 4.8 without, and 5.9 quarts total system capacity, for example after a rebuild. Honda's own term for that last figure is "Total", not dry. These are identical for the F20C and the F22C1, so every model year takes the same amount.

Honda's specification is API premium grade 10W-30 detergent oil, and the manual states that 10W-30 is "preferred for optimum fuel economy and year-round protection". Check the viscosity chart in your own manual before using an alternative grade.

The correct oil filter is Honda 15400-PCX-004, now supplied as 15400-PCX-306. The common Honda filter 15400-PLM-A02 that turns up in a lot of listings is not the S2000 part; Honda's own catalogue fitment list for it excludes the S2000. The two are not the same design either, so it is worth checking the box.

The F20C consumes oil at sustained high rpm, and some cars use close to a quart per 1,000 miles when driven hard. That is not automatically a fault, but running low at 8,000 rpm is how these engines die. Check the level far more often than you would on a modern car.

Capacities checked against all ten owner's manuals, 2000 to 2009.

The oil and coolant figures on those pages are total system capacities, which is why they differ from the change quantities on the fluids page.7
